The Mani Peninsula is down on the southernmost
point of the Peloponnese, and is usually protected from cold winds
in the winter by the Taigetos mountain range. It has some of the
cleanest turquoise seas in the Mediterranean.
The villages are scattered from the water’s edge up
into the foothills of the Taigetos, and almost all of them have
superb sea views and sunset views.
The region is famous for its olive oil, fauna and
flora, and the mountain gorges and old stone mule paths are wonderful
for walkers. The old stone houses have an architectural style all
of their own and this house is a wonderful example.
The house is in Platsa, some 10 minutes by car
up in the hills, but on the main bus route from Kalamata (one hour
away), and south to Aeropoli and the desolate beauty of the Inner
Mani. It is situated in the centre of the village, just off the
main square, and has been restored in keeping with the traditional
Greek style. Platsa has the advantage of being an old established
village with two shops, two bars and one of the best taverns in
the region. Eating on the terrace gives you spectacular views of
the coastline.
