Bonfire Bombshell as New Year Revellers Damage Sports Field
Villagers were shocked to be confronted with devastation left behind by thoughtless party-goers. This is particularly upsetting for anyone involved in the 50 years of fundraising and in the development and caring of a major local asset.
Laurie Moore, Secretary of The Harrold Playing Field Association, sadly reports: “Over the New Year an impromptu firework party was held at Harrold Playing Field. The revellers, of whom there were quite a few, judging by the array of bottles and cans left behind, set a bonfire in the centre of the cricketsquare and drove tubes into the pitches to launch their rockets.
The sports field,on which hundreds of local children play Junior Football
each Saturday and, in the summer, is almost in constant use, was left in a
very sorry state. A large amount of glass and paper litter was strewn across
the field.
The fence which protects the square, which is the centre-piece of one of
Bedfordshire's most picturesque cricket fields, was broken down to gain
access to the centre of the field.
That anyone should do such deliberate damage is beyond the comprehension of Harrold's residents. The firework party actually went out of its way to damage the square and no one with a love of the village and its rich sporting life could possibly have perpetrated such a thoughtless act.”
Local magistrate, Bob Woodward, who tends the cricket pitches at Harrold Playing Field was horrified when he made the discovery.
"This was a deliberate act of vandalism; one that was premeditated and
obviously calculated to cause damage to the playing surface", said Bob.
Harrold Playing Field Association would like to hear from anyone who may
have any information regarding the events of last week-end.”
